The personal decision behind the application

The nationwide posting commitment is not a formality. Initial placement can include a rural, remote or isolated port of entry. CBSA may consider preferences, but operational needs determine available placements.

Pause before applying

Think through relocation, shift work, weekends and holidays, adverse weather, uniform requirements, defensive equipment, travel and operating a government vehicle.

Prepare these records

  • Government-issued identification showing your legal name
  • Education proof and any foreign-credential assessment
  • Front and back of your unrestricted driver’s licence
  • A consistent employment and address timeline
  • Names and contact details for dependable references

Common questions

Can experience replace the education requirement?

The current qualification page says CBSA will not accept a combination of education, training and experience as an alternative to the education prerequisite.

Does a graduated or probationary licence qualify?

No. The published requirements exclude graduated-licensing restrictions, probationary licences and expired licences.

Will I definitely be placed in my preferred region?

No. Preferences may be considered, but candidates commit to accepting a posting anywhere in Canada.

BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

Candidate action list

  • Verify every prerequisite before applying.
  • Collect official proof in one secure folder.
  • Discuss relocation realities with anyone affected by your decision.

Officer trainee recruitment is normally managed through a Government of Canada Jobs process or inventory. The job advertisement and messages sent for your specific selection process always control.

Before the process opens

  • Create or update your GC Jobs account.
  • Subscribe to alerts because some processes may be open for a short period.
  • Use an email address you monitor consistently and check junk folders.
  • Make sure your legal name is consistent across your application and documents.

Build a clear application

Be specific

Answer screening questions directly. Include dates, context and enough detail to show how you meet each stated requirement.

Keep proof ready

Do not wait for the interview to locate diplomas, transcripts, licence records or credential assessments.

Selection-process rule

Do not assume information from another application carries forward. Follow the exact poster, questionnaire and deadlines for the process you are applying to.

After submitting

  • Save the poster and selection-process number.
  • Save a copy of your submitted answers.
  • Record the submission date and email used.
  • Monitor GC Jobs and email for assessment invitations.
  • Notify recruitment if your contact information changes.

Common questions

Does being in an inventory guarantee an assessment?

No. An inventory allows the organization to identify candidates as needs arise; it is not an appointment or training invitation.

Should I use a generic résumé?

Your résumé should be accurate and complete, but screening answers should be tailored to the exact requirements in the job advertisement.

BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

Candidate action list

  • Save the selection-process number.
  • Keep a copy of every submitted answer.

What the exam assesses

Reasoning skills

Draw conclusions and solve problems from the information provided.

Analytical thinking

Break a situation into relevant parts and work logically toward an outcome.

Client service orientation

Choose responses that balance quality, timeliness, fairness, courtesy and outcomes.

Writing skills

Recognize clear, correct and audience-appropriate written communication.

Plan the testing window

  • Choose a quiet period with a reliable device and internet connection.
  • Read the invitation and technical instructions before opening the test.
  • Do not start until you can remain uninterrupted for the full session.
  • Use only materials and assistance expressly permitted by the exam instructions.
Accommodation must come first

If a disability, functional limitation or condition may affect your performance, contact the National Recruitment Team before beginning. The official page says candidates who proceed without requesting accommodation must accept the result.

Results and retesting

Successful OTEE results are valid indefinitely. An unsuccessful result ends the candidacy, and the official waiting period to rewrite is one full year. Rewriting early does not create a valid result and restarts the waiting period.

Common questions

Do I need to memorize CBSA laws for the OTEE?

No. The official exam page says the questions are hypothetical and prior CBSA knowledge is not required. Preparation should focus on the assessed thinking and communication skills.

Can I request another test date?

The official page lists limited grounds, such as religious obligations, a death in the immediate family, a documented medical reason, certain prepaid vacations, or paid military leave or training. Proof may be required.

Can I share exam questions afterward?

No. Treat all assessment content as protected. Cheating, plagiarism and helping another person cheat can result in sanctions or removal.

BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

Candidate action list

  • Read the full invitation before starting.
  • Arrange an uninterrupted 135-minute testing period.

The interview assesses how you communicate, exercise judgment and act under pressure. CBSA also uses this stage to validate prerequisites, so missing documentation can delay or end a candidacy.

Published interview competencies

Dealing with difficult situations

Remain composed, respectful and effective when circumstances are tense or uncertain.

Decisiveness

Reach a defensible decision without unnecessary delay.

Effective interactive communication

Listen, clarify, explain and adapt to the person and situation.

Judgment

Consider facts, risks, policy, fairness and consequences.

Personal integrity

Be truthful, accountable and consistent even when inconvenient.

Values and ethics

Apply public-service values and exercise authority fairly.

Build an experience bank

Prepare several real examples from employment, volunteering, school, community involvement or other responsibilities. For each example, write short notes using:

SituationTaskActionResultLearning

Focus most of your answer on what you did, why you chose that response, what changed and what you learned. Do not invent an example or memorize a script that no longer sounds natural.

Document readiness

  • Education proof
  • Unrestricted driver’s licence
  • Identity documents named in the invitation
  • Any forms or declarations requested by recruitment
Format can change

Interview delivery, technology, timing and document-upload instructions may vary. Use the invitation—not a third-party guide—as the final authority.

Common questions

Will CBSA provide interview feedback?

The current selection overview says applicants are told whether they pass or fail, but CBSA does not provide feedback.

Should every answer be about law enforcement?

No. Use the strongest truthful example that demonstrates the competency. The quality of your actions and reasoning matters more than forcing every story into a policing context.

BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

Candidate action list

  • Prepare two or more examples for each competency.
  • Verify that every prerequisite document is available.

Checked July 28, 2026

This assessment evaluates the ability to deal with stress and helps determine suitability to complete duty-firearms training, a condition of employment.

Official format

  • Administered by clinical psychologists at designated locations across Canada.
  • Includes two examinations and a face-to-face interview.
  • Results are currently valid for two years.

Appropriate preparation

Do

  • Read appointment instructions carefully.
  • Arrive rested and on time.
  • Bring requested identification.
  • Answer consistently and honestly.
  • Ask procedural questions when instructions are unclear.

Do not

  • Search for a supposed “ideal profile.”
  • Rehearse deceptive answers.
  • Hide relevant information.
  • Use substances to alter your state.
  • Assume a third party can predict suitability.
Integrity boundary

This guide does not provide strategies to manipulate psychological testing. The safest and most appropriate approach is accurate self-reporting and compliance with the psychologist’s instructions.

Common questions

Is this a knowledge test about CBSA?

No. Its published purpose relates to stress tolerance and suitability for duty-firearms training.

Can I receive detailed clinical feedback?

Recruitment communications and consent documents govern what can be released. Do not assume detailed scores or explanations will be provided.

BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

Candidate action list

  • Confirm the date, location and identification requirements.
  • Plan transportation and adequate sleep.
  • Answer the psychologist’s questions honestly.

Before beginning training at the Canada Border Services College, candidates must complete and pass both required Canadian firearms safety course tests.

CFSCCanadian Firearms Safety Course
CRFSCCanadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course

What CBSA requires

  • Successful completion of both course tests.
  • Proof of completion submitted in the manner recruitment requests.
  • No Possession and Acquisition Licence is required solely for this selection requirement.

Plan ahead

Course availability, cost, scheduling and proof-processing times vary by provider and location. Do not wait until the last possible date after receiving instructions.

  • Use a recognized course provider.
  • Confirm whether the course and test are combined.
  • Keep receipts and course reports.
  • Scan proof clearly and preserve the original.
  • Follow the deadline in your invitation.
Different from CBSA duty-firearms training

These civilian safety courses satisfy a recruitment condition. Recruits later receive CBSA-specific training in the use and handling of duty firearms.

Common questions

Do I need to buy a firearm?

No. The recruitment requirement concerns completion of the safety courses and tests.

Does a PAL replace proof of the courses?

Follow the exact evidence instructions from recruitment. The general CBSA page emphasizes proof of successful completion of both courses and says a PAL is not required.

BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

Checked July 28, 2026

A Health Canada-designated physician completes an Occupational Health Assessment Report to evaluate whether the candidate can perform the physical duties and complete use-of-force training.

Published standards

VisionCorrected vision of 6/9 in the better eye and 6/15 in the other eye.
HearingNo more than a 25-decibel loss in the better ear from 500 to 3,000 hertz.

Medical results are generally valid for two years, subject to conditions. The designated physician’s decision determines fitness for use-of-force training and the physical duties of a BSO.

Prepare for the appointment

  • Read every form before the appointment.
  • Bring identification and corrective lenses or hearing devices used.
  • Bring requested medical information or medication details.
  • Answer the confidential health questionnaire accurately.
  • Follow instructions for additional testing if requested.
Medical privacy

Do not upload medical records to this guide. Health information should be provided only through the official process and to the professionals identified in your instructions.

Common questions

Can my family doctor complete the assessment?

The general process describes an assessment by a physician designated through the official occupational-health process. Follow the scheduling instructions you receive.

Should I stop prescribed medication before the exam?

Do not change treatment without medical advice. Bring accurate medication information and discuss relevant questions with the examining professional.

Checked July 28, 2026

This stage applies to bilingual positions. The current published requirement is intermediate BBB proficiency in the candidate’s second official language.

What BBB represents

ReadingUnderstand work-related written material at the required level.
WritingCommunicate accurately in work-related written situations.
OralCommunicate and understand spoken information at the required level.

Prepare strategically

  • Use Public Service Commission self-assessment and preparation resources.
  • Practise under time limits rather than only doing casual language study.
  • Build vocabulary for workplace instructions, service and decision-making.
  • Practise speaking in complete, organized answers.

Previous results

If you have completed federal second-language testing before, wait for CBSA instructions on how to submit or validate the results. Do not assume another test automatically transfers.

Common questions

Do English-essential candidates complete this stage?

Not as a requirement for an English-essential position. It applies when the position is bilingual.

Is conversational ability enough?

The requirement is a formal federal language profile. Preparation should cover reading, writing and oral interaction—not conversation alone.

BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

  • Confirm whether your position is bilingual.
  • Use PSC preparation resources.
  • Keep previous federal language-test details available.

Checked July 28, 2026

Because BSOs perform enforcement work and handle sensitive information, candidates must obtain Enhanced Reliability Status plus Secret Clearance and maintain the required clearance during employment.

Published screening elements

  • Telephone integrity interview
  • Credit check
  • Law-enforcement and security-database verifications
  • Digital fingerprints, generally at the candidate’s expense
  • Forms covering employment, qualifications, references and travel outside Canada

Build an accurate history

Records to gather

  • Addresses with month/year dates
  • Employment and education dates
  • Supervisor or institutional contacts
  • International travel dates and destinations
  • Legal name changes and identity documents

Integrity principles

  • Disclose what is asked.
  • Explain gaps rather than hiding them.
  • Correct mistakes promptly.
  • Do not coach references.
  • Keep answers consistent across forms and interviews.
Protect sensitive information

Do not save security-screening answers, fingerprints, financial details or travel history in this public HTML guide. Complete them only through the official secure process.

Preliminary self-reflection

The official eligibility page includes a non-determinative questionnaire covering criminal or border issues, illegal drug activity, unethical employment conduct, illegal online activity, problematic associations, and vulnerability to coercion. A “yes” does not let this guide predict an outcome; it means the matter may need to be discussed honestly during the integrity process.

Common questions

Does another department’s clearance automatically transfer?

Do not assume it does. Complete every step CBSA asks for, even when you currently or previously held another clearance.

What should I do if I cannot remember an exact date?

Use reliable records to reconstruct the history and follow official instructions for estimates or explanations. Never invent precision.

BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

Candidate action list

  • Gather complete address, work, education and travel timelines.
  • Budget for digital fingerprints if required.
  • Disclose accurately and correct errors promptly.

Current CBSA guidance says the PAT is conducted during in-residence OITP. It is described as a fitness evaluation rather than a pass/fail exercise, but falling below minimum standards increases the risk of injury or training failure.

Current-process note

The official PAT page says the older PARE is not required for the current 2024-EA-OIM-FB-02-009 officer trainee process. Requirements can differ by process, so always follow your invitation.

Continuous push-ups10–1415–34
Dead hang30–44 seconds45–59 seconds

Training priorities

  • Cardiovascular capacity
  • Muscular strength and endurance
  • Agility and directional changes
  • Ground movement and safe recovery
  • Mobility, sleep and injury prevention
Health notice

Official guidance recommends consulting a medical professional before starting a fitness program. This guide is not medical advice and no program can guarantee success.

Common questions

Should I train only for the four self-evaluation measures?

No. They are readiness indicators. OITP also requires sustained physical participation, agility, recovery, safe movement and the ability to learn use-of-force skills.

Should I book a PARE test anyway?

Not unless your own selection-process instructions require it. The current PAT page specifically notes that PARE is not required for process 2024-EA-OIM-FB-02-009.

Checked July 28, 2026

After successfully completing in-residence OITP, recruits begin paid on-the-job development at the port of entry determined through the Duty Placement Process.

How the OID Program works

  • Normally 12 to 18 months.
  • Completed as a CBSA officer trainee (developmental), classified FB-02.
  • Performance and competency based.
  • Includes operational duties, coaching, learning, feedback and demonstrated competency.
  • Successful completion leads to appointment as a border services officer at FB-03.

Currently published salary ranges

FB-02 trainee$78,769–$87,708 annually
FB-03 BSO$85,211–$101,058 annually

Rates can change through collective bargaining. Verify the current Treasury Board rates and your letter of offer rather than relying on a saved guide.

What strong development looks like

  • Apply legislation and policy accurately.
  • Ask questions before uncertainty becomes an error.
  • Use coaching and constructive feedback.
  • Document decisions clearly.
  • Demonstrate respect, courtesy and fair application of the law.
  • Maintain integrity, reliability, fitness and all conditions of employment.

Working conditions to expect

BSOs work across land borders, airports, marine terminals, rail ports and postal facilities. Conditions can include shift rotations, weekends, statutory holidays, overtime, travel, adverse weather, high-volume service and defensive equipment.

Common questions

Is promotion to FB-03 automatic after a set number of months?

No. The program is competency and performance based. Time is only one part of the published 12-to-18-month development period.

Can I choose a different port after training?

Your initial port is determined through the Duty Placement Process. Any later mobility is governed by employment opportunities and internal processes, not this guide.

BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

Candidate action list

  • Treat coaching as part of the program, not criticism.
  • Track expectations and ask for clarification early.
